It’s National CBD Day!
August 8th has been designated National CBD Day by National Day Calendar. This is a day to celebrate and recognize the many benefits of CBD. About 20,000 news and media outlets follow National Day Calendar so you are sure to hear more about National CBD Day.
What is CBD?
CBD stands for cannabidiol, a chemical constituent of the cannabis plant. CBD is just one of over 100 chemical constituents found in the cannabis plant. CBD and other cannabinoids can be found in other plants, particularly echinacea, black pepper and cacao.
CBD is non-psychoactive. CBD will not get you high. THC, another cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant, is responsible for the psychotropic activity of marijuana.

Are there any side effects?
Yes, some people do experience side effects when taking CBD. Common side-effects include fatigue, diarrhea and changes in appetite and weight. CBD may also interact with other medications. Be especially careful if your medication or supplement contains a grapefruit warning. Grapefruit and CBD interfere with cytochromes P450, a group of enzymes that are important to drug metabolism.
How does CBD work?
Cannabinoids like CBD work with the endocannabinoid system, a regulatory mechanism within in the body. The endocannabinoid system is composed of three main parts – the endocannabinoids, the cannabinoid receptors, and the enzymes that create and breakdown the endocannabinoids.
There are two main types of cannabinoid receptors – CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are found in both the central and peripheral nervous systems and in the kidneys, liver and lungs. CB2 receptors are found primarily throughout the immune system. Cannabinoid receptors function like a lock and key. The receptors are the lock and the cannabinoids are the key. When the key fits the lock opens. Different keys may produce different outcomes as the receptor can be both activated and blocked.
CBD molecules bind to both cannabinoid receptors and neurotransmitter receptors. CBD actually doesn’t bind very strongly to the cannabinoid receptors but influences other molecules within the endocannabinoid system.
CBD stops the body from absorbing anandamide, so levels of anandamide in the bloodstream increase. Anandamide is commonly known as the joy or bliss molecule. Low levels of anandamide have been linked to schizophrenia and depression. Anandamide is also associated with regulating pain. Higher levels of anandamide in the blood may lessen the amount of pain a person feels.
CBD may also limit inflammation in the central nervous system, which may benefit people experiencing pain, insomnia and some immune system responses.
